十年再見楊德昌 Tribute to Edward YANG
光陰的故事 In Our Time
Justly considered one of the forerunners that kickstarts the New Taiwanese Cinema Movement, In Our Time (1982) was made possible when the CMPC gave the green light to four unknown young directors including Tao Te-chen, Edward Yang, Ko I-cheng, and Chang Yi to direct four independent segments of mini stories respectively set in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and the 80s, with each focusing on a character who is going through a different stage in his or her life.
Edward Yang's Expectations is a heartbreaking story about a pre-teen girl's unrequited love for the college student next-door, whose girlfriend, as she later finds out, happens to be her own elder sister. Deemed by critics as the most polished work out of the bunch, this angst and sorrow of the youth will be further explored in his later works.
