Chhara is a ghetto in Western India where a group of young Chhara Tribals have long been considered “born criminals.” Among them is Dakxin, a director and a playwriter who was arrested on false charges in 2003. Dakxin and his friend Roxy became our guides into why the Chhara are so reviled. They told us how the Chhara were notified
as “born criminals” by the British colonial government in 1871, and how entire families were incarcerated in “soft” concentration camps. The British are long gone but their legacy remains in the shape of social discrimination and prejudice. There is; however, a ray of hope in the form of Budhan Theatre, which works to bring about changes in this beleaguered community.

Wall Stories is an unusual film that takes its audience on a pictorial journey, using a lively and original approach that combines animation, imaginary dialogues, and documentary footage to tell the many incredible stories of the history and culture of its people, including a dispossessed saint, a newly minted gentry and generations of painters, and the daily life that is lived around them, through the mural paintings found around the region in the Western Himalayas.
