日本作曲家佐村河內守,1963年出生於廣島,高中時開始出現偏頭痛,三十五歲時完全失聰。他的音樂在日本廣為流傳,被《時代雜誌》讚為數位時代的貝多芬。2013年日本311大地震之後,佐村河內守還以他的音樂撫慰亡魂,備受肯定。2014年2月,一位大學講師新垣隆發表了一則震驚全日本的聲明,他表示佐村河內守大部份作品都是由他捉刀!並且聲稱他並沒有聽力障礙!不久,佐村河內守召開記者會,向社會大眾致歉,但堅稱自己的聽障是真的。媒體大肆炒作這個醜聞,佐村河內守自此避開公眾活動。
森達也導演取得了佐村河內的信任,進入他與妻子隱身的公寓,與他進行尖銳的訪談,也記錄了他與其他來訪媒體的互動。影片沒有提出黑白分明的答案,卻讓我們看到現代人成名的渴望與媒體的嗜血。

Mamoru Samuragochi, a musical genius who was once crowned “Japan's Beethoven” because of his deafness, found himself at the center of a scandal in February 2014 when it was revealed that he had hired a ghostwriter, a university lecturer named Takashi Niigaki, to compose most of his famous music since the early 90s. To add insult to injury, Niigaki further accused Samuragochi of faking his deafness in order to construct a mythical persona around himself. Director Tatsuya Mori gains the trust of the disgraced composer and his wife, making repeated visits to the house where the couple are in hiding, unmasking the real story behind themedia frenzy.

1995年3月20日,奧姆真理教在東京地鐵站施放沙林毒氣,造成多人傷亡,引起日本社會恐慌,傳播媒體對真理教的嚴酷批判亦自此展開。導演自1996年初開始,持家用DV,深入記錄真理教宣傳部副部長荒木浩的生活、真理教信徒彼此之間的關係。透過層層堆疊的敘事,引領觀眾進入奧姆真理教瘋狂世界的內在,並逐漸理解這些信徒的行為與價值觀、宇宙觀,他們與其被稱為「異常」,不如說是對於奄奄一息的生活,展現某種愚直的希望。

It was March 20, 1995 when the Aum Supreme Truth cult poison gas attack took place in the Tokyo subways. This documentary, shot on a home-use digital camcorder by a freelance TV journalist, covers the everyday, quite ordinary lives of the Aum cult members by gaining access to their housing facilities, and turns the camera around onto the "fanatic" media crowd that surrounds them.

1999年9月,森達也再度執起攝影機,以日本奧姆真理教為題材繼續進行拍攝。此時,真理教已分散於日本多個據點,並繼續活動。片中的世界是一個包括教徒、鄰居、警方、右派愛國主義者、媒體和教徒們所建造和居住的所在,儘管電視持續倡導「奧姆=人民公敵」,然而,這部作品裡所呈現的世界,確實和一般日本人認知的世界,差異甚鉅。

By the time Mori made this follow-up to A, it was not only the name of the group that had changed from Aum to Aleph, in the view of the director, Japanese society had begun to slowly deteriorate and decay, with all sense of religion completely lost. Reluctant at first to delve into the realms of sequels which shed notoriously poor results, Mori was persuaded otherwise when he saw the chance to focus on a completely different aspects of the group. The result is a balanced portrait of a group of people who have always been treated with bias in the popular press.
