日本二次大戰戰敗,櫻田滿州男和母親從滿州國被撤離,回到日本櫻田大家族的宅院中,母親在滿州國的遭遇不僅沒得到理解與同情,反而被族人懷疑她必然以妥協換取苟活。
作為家族繼承人,櫻田滿州男很快就被家族中輩分最高的祖父帶走,交由姑姑照料。每當婚喪事情發生,家族眾人便聚會行禮如儀。當母親過世時,他承受著被迫長大成人的壓力,又承受著青春期的騷動,暗戀著表妹,慾望著姑姑,也欽羨著具男子氣概的堂弟等等複雜的情緒。
櫻田滿州男在祖父的安排下準備成親,婚禮當日,新娘逃婚了。祖父深感威權受到挑釁,堅持孫子完成一場沒有新娘的婚禮儀式。大島渚以外強中乾的櫻田家族作為國家的隱喻,以父祖輩與年輕世代象徵日本戰後父權體制崩落、年輕世代迷失的局勢。

Two years after the end of World War II, Masuo and his mother are repatriated from Manchuria and returned to stay at the Sakurada family estate where family members come together only during such meticulously observed ceremonies as funerals and weddings. As the heir to the family line, little Masuo is then forcefully separated from his mother, and put in the hands of his grandfather, Kasuomi, the patriarch of the family. He felt increasingly powerless during the time of his mother’s death. The burden of manhood and the sexual awakening that he felt for both his aunt and her daughter only add to the confusion. His despair reaches its depth when he was made to go through a brideless marriage ceremony at his oppressive grandfather's insistence. The Ceremony is a brutal critique of the postwar Japanese society that resembles the incestuous family which looks prosperous on the outside, yet rotten from within.

One of the most important figures in world cinema, Nagisa Oshima’s films deal with difficult subject matters that serve as a critique as much of the contemporary Japanese society as of the darker side of human nature. Equally provocative is his unique and original visual and narrative approach to films that leaves the audiences both shaken yet mesmerized.
