The Taoyuan Film Festival Pays Tribute to Mothers
In this year’s selection, the Festival showcases films with atypical mothers in the central roles. Screened on the 14th of May to coincide with Mother's Day, Destination Arnold (2016) by Sascha Ettinger-Epstein is the classic example of how everything does not quite go as planned in the world of documentary filmmaking. The original idea for the film, as said by the journalist turned director to the Taoyuan audience, was about two aboriginal woman bodybuilders who tried to make it to “The Arnolds,” the first ever bodybuilding competition held in Australia that was initiated by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Once the director secured the funds and was about to start filming, however, she found out that the two protagonists had became “really fat” by bodybuilder standard and were by no mean qualified to take part in the competition. One of the protagonists Tash even wanted to drop out from the project, while going through a depression herself. The director thought it would be just an easy piece of work that took at most 6 months to finish, she winded up spending 2 years to get it done. Instead of being a celebration of the triumph of the underdog, the final film is more of a heartfelt portrait of the ultimate survivors who tried to make peace with their inner demons. Despite the dramas of the production, the director hoped that the film can bring awareness to the health issues and domestic violence that affect a lot of people in the aboriginal community.
The screening of Yoshinori SATO’s heart-wrenching drama Her Mother (2016) was attended by its lead actress Ryo Nishiyama who was moved to tears while receiving applause from the Taiwanese audience for her determined performance. The Japanese actress explained that the difficult subject matter of death penalty and the intense shooting schedule put a lot of pressure on her emotionally. Luckily, the shooting finished in just 14 days due to budget constraints that she did not need to go through the emotional turmoil demanded for the character for too long. When asked how she prepared the scene where she burst into tears after discovering the truth about what happened to her daughter, the actress said that, since it was shot on the second day of the shooting, she wasn’t ready for such an emotionally charged scene, so the director actually pushed her to her limit that she effortlessly transformed the stress she experienced into her acting.
