桃園電影節今日首映吳乙峰導演新作《尋找唐吉軻德》,導演吳念真、柯一正專程出席映後座談,與吳導共同分享紙風車劇團巡迴點滴,並向辛苦的各地志工獻上致意。另外,電影節同步放映兩部楊德昌的經典影片《牯嶺街少年殺人事件》《恐怖分子》,吸引滿場觀眾,資深製片余為彥和混音師杜篤之分頭出席映後座談,導演王維明也特地前來重溫當年老師的作品,感受到對電影創作更加堅定的熱情。《俠盜賓漢》導演馬修.霍姆斯則和觀眾分享自己的電影夢,募資拍攝澳洲歷史人物的過程宛如「澳洲版魏德聖」。

吳乙峰導演繼《生命》後,歷時五年拍攝完成的《尋找唐吉軻德》不只記錄紙風車劇團巡迴全台319個鄉鎮的過程,更著重幫助各地成功募資、為當地孩子接受藝術教育盡心盡力的幕後志工以及他們的生命故事。片中受訪的志工們,包含學校老師、早餐店老闆、醫師、工地師傅等人,今天也特別受邀觀賞電影,並和在場觀眾數度被片中的正能量深深地打動。映後座談上,吳念真導演語重心長地表示,以前台灣經濟狀況好,每個人只要努力,都有改變的機會,但現在情況已經不同,為了讓社會能夠擁有好向上流動,我們都願意出錢出力做些善事,依據他的經驗,只要做善事,就一定會完成。吳念真說出了現場所有贊助偏鄉孩童學習與藝術欣賞的志工的心聲,引起熱烈的掌聲。

長達四小時的楊德昌經典長片《牯嶺街少年殺人事件》盛名不墜,吸引滿場觀眾中約八成的桃園民眾慕名前來,且七成以上都是《牯》片推出的1991年以後出生的年輕人,對於《牯》片所散發出來純粹美感深深感到折服。而余為彥也表示,拍《牯》片讓他前所未有的堅定地想要完成這部作品,片中的所有細節都以驚人的意志力與高度熱情所完成。余為彥也補充,姜文的《陽光燦爛的日子》片名正與楊導的《牯》片的英文名稱A Brighter Summer Day相呼應,可見楊德昌導演對華語電影世界具有不容忽視的影響力,策展人游惠貞也表示,楊德昌是台灣的文化財。在《恐怖分子》的映後座談上,資深混音師杜篤之表示這部是楊導該階段的創作中最好看的作品,杜篤之還補充了楊導的很多小故事,讓年輕世代的觀眾感到非常新鮮而感動。

另外,昨日澳洲導演馬修出席《俠盜賓漢》映後座談,該片改編自真人真事,為了處理好歷史題材,導演做過不少研究、試圖還原史實,並耗時十年才完成劇本,卻因拍攝資金短缺只好轉向網路募資,費盡千辛萬苦終於以台幣兩千萬的低成本拍出這部具西部電影神采的作品。導演同時也透露,目前正努力募資準備把剩下的劇本拍出來,到時會以三部曲的形式完整呈現這個系列,與魏德聖導演在籌拍《賽德克.巴萊》時的歷程如出一轍。由於映後觀眾反應熱烈,導演也特別分享選角巧思:劇中主角賓漢在劫取過客錢財時,應一位老太太的請求,選擇讓她繼續保有珍貴項鍊,展現人性善與惡的灰色地帶;馬修說,飾演這位老太太的正是賓漢的後代。參展期間馬修也把握機會認識台灣電影,特別在離台前捨去出遊行程前去觀看《牯嶺街少年殺人事件》。

World Premiere of WU Yi-feng's Looking for Don Quijote

The third day of the 2017 Taoyuan Film Festival brought us the world premiere of veteran documentary film director WU Yi-feng’s Looking for Don Quijote (2017) where fellow directors WU Nien-jen and KO I-cheng were also in attendance for the post-screening Q&A session to share about the experience of their involvement in the “319 Paper Windmill theatre project” featured in the film. Shot over the span of 5 years, this life-affirming film followed the dedicating people who devoted themselves to bringing in theatre performances at the national level to children from Taiwan's rural regions.

One of the highlights of this year’s lineup is the late Edward YANG’s remastered version of A Brighter Summer Day (1991). Not only was it sold out, but over 80% of the audiences were Taoyuan natives and a majority of them were born after the film was made, proving that this 4-hour masterpiece indeed stands the test of time. Producer YU Wei-yen and director WANG Wei-ming also participated in the post-screening Q&A. YANG’s first international breakthrough film The Terrorizers (1986) was also screened, attended by the late director’s longtime audio mixing master TU Du-Chih.

At the same time, Australian director Matthew Holmes was presenting his bushranger film The Legend of Ben Hall (2016) to which the audience in Taoyuan showed positive reactions.10 years in the making, this Australian Western was based on the true story of the most wanted bandit in colonial Australia. The director’s original plan was to shoot a short film by using the funds he raised on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. But thanks to the investors who believed in the potential of the project, it was then developed into a feature length project. The director revealed that he is currently working on two companion prequels that, including this film, would become a trilogy that would cover much of the bushranger history of Australia.
